DIY'ing Your Concrete Garage Flooring: Is it Worth the Risk?

DIY'ing Your Concrete Garage Flooring: Is it Worth the Risk?

A fresh new concrete flooring system can do wonders for improving the look of your garage. Whether you use this space for weekend projects, storing your things, or for barbeques, an epoxy floor coating can transform your garage into an extension of your home. As a home-improvement project, epoxy floor coating is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners nationwide. Once you’ve decided that this is a project you’d like to add to your to-do list, you’re going to need to make an important choice. Do you want to DIY this project, or do you want to hire a professional concrete flooring specialist?

One of the biggest factors when considering any home improvement project is cost. As with many projects, performing the work DIY will be substantially cheaper than hiring a professional. The cost for coating the concrete floor of an average two-car garage can range from $200-500, depending on the products you’ve selected. On the other hand, hiring a professional contractor usually ranges from $3,000-6,000 for a two-car garage. Prices will vary based on the size of the garage, the condition of the existing concrete, and the design or type of coating that you select.

While using a DIY epoxy kit can result in a nice looking floor, you’re going to be somewhat limited when it comes to design options. Your main options are going to be either a solid color, usually gray or brown, or a solid color with a light spattering of colored vinyl flakes. The speckled look that the flakes achieve help distract the viewer from any imperfections in the finished coating, of which there will likely be many (especially if you’re DIYing this project). Roller marks, bubbles, and pin holes are almost guaranteed without the professional touch. With a professional coating your options are going to be far greater as well. You can choose to use the same speckled design as the DIY kits offer, but you’ll have the option of quartz chips instead, or a design where the entire floor is covered in the chips and the base coat isn’t visible. You will even have the option of a metallic or marbled look for the epoxy.

Preparation and Application

Applying a DIY epoxy kit isn’t as easy as opening a can of paint and rolling it on the floor. The first and most important step you’ll need to take is preparing the existing floor. A professional flooring contractor will use a diamond grinder or similar tool to clean the floor and create a surface that the epoxy coating can easily adhere to. Since it’s unlikely that you own a diamond grinder, you’re going to want to “acid etch” the concrete. This is the process of washing the concrete with an acidic solution, which is designed to do the same thing as the diamond grinder: Create a surface that the epoxy coating can bond to. While acid etching is surely more effective than cleaning with soap and water, it won’t allow for the maximum amount of adhesion between the coating and the concrete, meaning it won’t last as long. Many people who DIY their garage floors report that the floor began to peel and crack within two to three years, whereas a professional installed coating can last as long as twenty years.

While it may be tempting to attempt applying your own epoxy coating, it’s important to remember that this is a messy, time-consuming job, and no matter how well you apply the coating, you’re not going to get the longevity guaranteed by hiring a local Maryland professional flooring contractor like DC Generals.
